Step Down

4 South - Step Down Unit

The Step Down Unit is available 24/7 to meet the unique needs of patients who are too sick to be on a medical floor, but not sick enough to be in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU).  These patients typically require closer monitoring in our 31-bed unit.

Our staff members are trained to care for patients suffering from a range of critical conditions, including:

• Heart attack, defibrillator or pacemaker implant or other cardiac condition
• Dialysis patients or renal failure patients
• Stroke
• Cancer
• Severe pneumonia
• Sepsis or other serious or systemic infection
• Chronic or complicated non-healing wounds
• Chronic respiratory illnesses or exacerbations of COPD

During a patient's stay, our staff will frequently monitor vital signs and possibly heart rhythms.  They will also monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and weight in accordance with the physician's instructions. The 4 South team is passionate about caring for our patients and work together to do all they can to ensure excellent outcomes.  We welcome new RN Residents.

Telemetry

Our Telemetry unit is stationed on the 4th floor and provides around the clock monitoring of the patient’s heart rhythm.  Monitor Technicians are specially trained to monitor the patient 24 hours a day according to the physician’s order.  These technicians are able to view patients’ heart rate and heart rhythm from their station.  Any changes in the patient's heart rate or heart rhythm are communicated to the Nurse and can be addressed immediately.
